“Our natural state is to be ‘a single mass of joyful awareness’. Undivided. This is what spiritual liberation or mokṣa really means—it’s nothing but fully embracing our natural state.”   — Hareesh Christopher Wallace

triyoga once again celebrates the holiday season and coming of the new year with the well-loved ‘urban retreat’. The urban retreat brings the benefits of a yoga retreat without having to leave London during the holidays.

The retreat includes traditional yoga practises led by two of triyoga’s most well-respected and experienced teachers, Anna Ashby and Jean Hall. Nikki Slade, resident kirtan leader at triyoga, joins Anna and Jean at times during the retreat to deepen the connection to the heart through chanting, while Sarah Deco, a professional storyteller, enhances the inner experience by weaving in the power of story and myth. Through their combined skilful teaching and expression, they hold a focused environment and nurturing space for practice, contemplation and transformation preparing the way for an auspicious beginning to 2018.

This year’s retreat dives into essential Tantric philosophy drawing from the Recognition Sutras and other scriptures which offer concrete ways to reconcile + heal the differences we may experience at the deepest level. This body of work describes our natural state to be whole, integrated, complete or sampūrṇa, and therefore at peace with ourselves. Drawing upon these teachings we will enquire into the nature of this state, said to be ever present and available to us when we turn our awareness inwards and explore the essence of our being.

Each day includes an active and restorative asana practise including pranayama and meditation. At different times during the retreat there is formal kirtan (chanting) and satsang where the focus of the retreat is explored through personal reflection, journaling, stories and facilitated discussion. The retreat will culminate in the traditional way with a celebratory kirtan led by Nikki to say farewell to 2017 and welcome in the new year. This final kirtan is open to family and friends with tickets available in advance or on the day.

Through this 4-day immersion in the various practises and teachings of yoga, a transformative energy builds that offers insight and clarity. The transition from one year to the next offers a perfect time to remember, reflect and consciously usher in a new year.
